We shouldn’t complain because the end product is categorically worth waiting for.īetween them, Sosimi and Duckworth went about assembling a cast of fine musicians who sail under the banner of The Estuary 21. As one does, the inevitable promises to work together were made. The two musicians were introduced at Felabration 2012, the annual commemoration of the music of the legend. The Fela Kuti connection is doubly strong on this release thanks to Sosimi’s collaboration with Essex musician Sam Duckworth, perhaps better known as Get Cape. Indeed, they ooze out of sections of The Confluence, which is released on the consistently brilliant Wah Wah 45’s imprint. Returning to Sosimi’s own early influences, it’s clear that such powerful stimuli would stay with him right up until present day. Considering that, maybe we should now start referring to Dele Sosimi as a legend too.

Today, looking back over a career spanning five decades, we can see that Sosimi has consistently created innovative and memorable music and, just like his mentor, has ultimately become a significant influence on the careers of many other artists. Given that, a career in music was almost inevitable and, in an even stronger link back to the founding father of Afrobeat, Sosimi, by now a talented keyboardist, became a member of Kuti’s Egypt 80 band. He refers to it as his “university of life”. London-born Sosimi, who was raised in his parents’ native Nigeria, was schooled at Fela Kuti’s commune. However, there is a strong bond between the two. It would be inaccurate to claim that Dele Sosimi enjoyed the same level of fame or acclaim. Hell, the man virtually founded an entire genre. It’s a term that suffers from inflationary over-use, but surely few can deny that epithet being applied to the great Fela Kuti. But enough about the content (for now), let’s kick off by focusing on the creators. No matter, what it lacks in duration, it more than makes up for in quality. That will be no surprise to those familiar with Sosimi’s recent work and his penchant for brevity. Clocking in at a fraction over twenty minutes, it certainly falls into the snackable category.
